Frank Turocy | Future Terriers Shine With Akron It’s not often a player can find a positive in having to miss an entire season because of a devastating elbow injury. But for Stark County pitcher Frank Turocy (Akron University), being forced to accept a medical redshirt for the 2005 season opened an opportunity that never would have arisen before. That opportunity: two years of eligibility with his younger brother and new Akron Zip teammate Drew Turocy. READ MORE | Drew Turocy |
---------------------------------- During his first two seasons with the Zips, Frank has seen extensive playing time. In 2006, he made 17 appearances and accumulated an ERA of 5.34. In 2007, he solidified a spot in the rotation and went 4-3 in 12 starts. He also tied for the team lead with two complete games and a shutout. Through eight games this season, the 6’1, 200-pound junior is 2-1 in three starts with an ERA of 3.15 and 15 strikeouts – more than double his next closest teammate. His 20 innings is also tops on the team. And as for No. 2, it’s his brother Drew with 13 innings pitched. Drew’s high school career alone speaks wonders for the Canfield, Ohio native. He led his Canfield High School squad to a DII State Championship last season after going 30-3. On the mound, he went 9-1 with a microscopic ERA of 0.66. His junior year wasn’t too shabby either, as he again went 9-1 with an ERA of 1.45. Yet when freshmen enter the DI collegiate level, they are often faced with a learning curve that contains its series of up and downs. Apparently, that rule doesn’t apply to the southpaw. In his inaugural season with the Zips, he’s already worked his way into the rotation and has accumulated a 1-1 record and a 2.77 ERA. Oh, and as for the guy that is second to Frank in strikeouts, that too is Drew. But it’s not just his work on the hill that has people talking in the Mid-American Conference. The guy can hit too. In fact, he hits just as well has he pitches – if not better. Drew leads the Zips with a .476 batting average and is tied for first in doubles and home runs in seven games played. He’s also second in total hits and tied for the team lead in steals. It’s no secret; the Turocy duo can flat out play. The Zips currently posses a 4-4 record and are viable contenders for a MAC championship run. With the play of the two Turocy brothers, that outlook has become more and more likely with each passing game. This summer, the Terriers will be next in line as the heir apparent to the family matter, as both players have signed on for the 2008 campaign. ### |
