---------------------------------- After once trading in his bat and glove for a pair of swim trunks and sunny Florida skies, Stark County’s Tyler Maag (Southern Arkansas) quickly realized life without baseball was something that not even great weather or beach babes could replace. Months later, Maag is tearing up the Gulf South Conference with a .404 batting average to help guide his team to a 24-3 record.
Maag, a North Canton native, is in his second year with the Mulriders after earning All-South Central Region Gold Glove accolades last season. He hit .363 in their 2007 campaign with seven home runs, both of which ranked third on his team. He was also second on the team with 15 steals.
But this season, Maag has seen his game flourish to an even higher level, upping his average to a phenomenal .404 mark. He has already recorded 17 steals in 20 attempts, as well as slugged five home runs in only 27 games. The speedy outfielder possesses a rare combination of both speed and power – a combination that has helped to solidify him as one of the top outfielders in the conference.
Last summer with the Terriers, Maag finished third on the team in hitting (.303 avg.) behind returning players Jason Patton (Kent State) and Blake Chaffee (Miami, OH). He also led the team with 12 steals and was second in total hits en route to his first All-Star selection in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. The trio will join to help construct a formidable lineup this season, balancing both speed and power from top to bottom.
