-------------------------- In 40 games this season, Stark County's Eric Marzec (Youngstown State) has become one of the Horizon League's most feared hitters. Three home runs in one game will usually do that for a hitter. On May 12th, Marzec tied Youngstown State's single-game record with three home runs in the Penguins' 13-9 win over West Virginia. The trifecta tied former Terriers' assistant coach Jim Lipinski's record set in 2001. Marzec finished the afternoon 4-for-6 with six RBIs and four runs scored as the designated hitter and his 13 total bases also set a school record. So far this season, the Canton, Ohio native is hitting .315 with a team high five home runs. He also has 26 RBIs and 10 doubles.
On the mound, Marzec has strung together a 2-1 record in 12 relief appearances. He has solidified himself as one of the Penguins best arms out of the bullpen, holding opponents to a .198 batting average while maintaining a 2.82 ERA. At Central Catholic High School, he was named the Ohio Division III Player of the Year by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association after going 10-1 his senior season. He won his first 10 games that year, throwing a complete game in each outing before falling to Youngstown Ursuline in the state semifinal game. He also hit .371 with four home runs and 30 RBIs. The Penguins are 21-30 this season through 51 games, posting an 11-11 record in the Horizon League. ### |
