PDF Box Score GM2 Superb pitching and timely hitting lead Terriers over the SteamCANTON, Ohio – Last season Stark County was known for an explosive offense that ranked second in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, but this season it’s a dominant pitching staff that has them off to a 2-0 start to begin the 2008 campaign. Cole Johnson (Notre Dame) and Alan Morrison (Kent State) combined for a 1-0 shutout in game one of a doubleheader with the Cincinnati Steam (0-2) and in game two it was Drew Turocy (Akron) and Justin Gill (Kent State) that shutdown last year’s top offense for a 9-2 victory.
In two games, the Terriers’ (2-0) pitching staff held the Steam to eight hits and slugged out 15 of their own.
Johnson (1-0) tossed four innings of shutout ball in game one before giving away to Morrison in the fifth and both pitchers surrendered just one hit. Morrison picked up his first save of the season after tossing the final three innings and striking out three batters.
But the real difference maker in the game was catcher Ed Rohan (Winthrop), who led off the second inning with a deep blast over left-center field. The solo shot proved to be all the Terriers would need en route to the 1-0 win.
In game two it was Turocy (1-0) and Gill that shined on the mound, but their efforts were overshadowed by an offense that erupted for nine runs and 13 hits. Turocy threw four innings and scattered two hits for zero runs before being relieved by Gill. Gill, a true freshman for the Golden Flashes this spring, tossed three innings and gave up one earned run for the save. He also struck out two batters.
Matt Abro (W. Michigan) led the Terriers’ offensively with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, driving in three runs and scoring another. Tyler Maag (Southern Arkansas), Kevin Haas (Akron) and Turocy contributed with two hits apiece. Both Haas and Turocy also had two RBIs.
The Terriers will next be in action this Sunday when they host the Anderson Servants (2-0) for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. For more information on the games, log onto www.terriersbaseballclub.com or listen to the games live at www.sportsjuice.com. ###TerriersBaseballClub.com ### |
