Stark County’s starters continue to impress despite surrendering their first earned run of the season
CANTON, Ohio – For the second time in as many days, Stark County swept a doubleheader by defeating the Anderson Servants 3-2 and 5-2 in a double-dip Sunday afternoon.
The sweep improved the Terriers to 4-0 this season as they dropped their team ERA to 1.29 through 28 innings of work. Stark County picked up the first win after a pair of costly Servant errors negated Samuel Walker’s (IPFW) superb pitching performance. Walker tossed five innings and surrendered just one hit, but a pair of back-to-back errors in the bottom of the fifth inning led to three unearned runs for the Terriers.
Gabe Ortiz (Vanderbilt) led off the inning with a 2-out walk to break up Walker’s perfect game, and then Jerad Comarda (New Orleans) hit a soft grounder between short and third base. As both Servant infielders raced toward the ball, they promptly collided and the ball trickled into the outfield to allow Comarda to reach first safely. The very next batter, Cory Hindle (Kent State), then smashed a deep fly ball to left-centerfield. Servant leftfielder Craig Miller (Faulkner) raced to the wall and as he began to settle under the ball for the catch, the ball deflected off his glove to allow both runners to scamper around the bases for a two-run error. Bradshaw Perry (Dallas Baptist) then followed with a single up the middle to plate Hindle.
Ryan France (Toledo) pitched the final three innings to earn his first victory of the season, scattering five hits and striking out two. France relieved starter Tom Farmer (Akron) in the fifth after Farmer tossed four innings of one-hit ball.
Both Farmer and Walker combined to retire 25-straight batters after Anderson’s Matt Bona (Brevard CC) led off the top of the first with a single. His biggest pitch of the night, however, came in the top of the sixth when the Servants recorded three-straight singles to lead off the inning. After a hit-by-pitch brought in Anderson’s second run of the night, France worked out of the jam by getting a shallow fly out and then inducing a 1-2-3 double play.
In the second game the Terriers wasted little time getting on the board, as leadoff man Tyler Maag (Southern Arkansas) roped a line drive right over third base and down the leftfield line for a standup double in the first inning. Ortiz then followed up with a single up the middle to score Maag. Ed Rohan (Winthrop) continued his offensive tear by answering with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the centerfielder. Matt Abro (W. Michigan) then drove in Ortiz with a sacrifice fly. Jason Patton (Kent State) plated the final run of the inning with an RBI single up the middle.
Frank Turocy (Akron) improved to 1-0 after tossing three innings and giving up one earned run. Jeff Cinadr (Toledo) relieved him in the fourth and went three innings himself before giving away to Eric Marzec (Youngstown State) for the save. Both Cinadr and Marzec combined to give up just one hit in the final four innings of the game.
The Terriers will next be in action this Tuesday when they travel to the Delaware Cows (3-0) for a 5 p.m. showdown. For more information on that game, log onto www.terriersbaseballclub.com or listen to the game live at www.sportsjuice.com.
