NORTH CANTON, Ohio— The Stark County Terriers split their double header on Sunday against the Grand Lake Mariners. The first game the Terriers came out on top 6-5 on a walk off infield single. Unfortunately, they dropped the second game 6-3, putting their record at 10-9 on the season. The Mariners would get on the board first, scoring a run in the third inning. The Terriers would respond in the fourth inning by putting five runs on the scoreboard, all with two outs. After the first two batters of the inning failed to reach base, Kenny Socorro (Marshall University/ Miami, FL) drew a walk, followed by a single to right field by Jared Turocy (University of Akron/ Canfield, OH). Center fielder Josh Haley (UNC @ Pembrook/ Jackson Springs, NC) would then come to the plate and single to left center field, driving in Socorro from third. After the next batter drew another walk to load the bases, first baseman Mark Lapikas (University of Toledo/ Youngstown, OH) drove a fastball over the right field fence for a grand slam. By the time the inning was over Stark County led 5-1. The Mariners would come back to score four runs in the seventh inning to force the Terriers to bat in the bottom half of the seventh. The Terriers once again would get everything going with two outs. Designated hitter Jason Bagoly (Kent State University/ Austintown, OH) started off the hitting by driving a single up the middle. A throwing error by the shortstop on the next play would move Bagoly to third base. Catcher Chris Norton (Marshall University/ Tampa, FL) came to the plate next and hit a chopper to the shortstop, beating out the throw allowing Bagoly to score the game winning run. Starting pitcher for the Terriers was RHP Tyler Newhart (John A. Logan College/ Alliance, OH). Newhart pitched four plus innings, allowing one run (0 ER), off five hits, while striking out five batters. Earning the win for the Terriers in game one was RHP Pat O’Brien (Bowling Green State University/ Boardman, OH). O’Brien pitched one inning, allowing one run (0ER), off two hits. The Terriers got off to a quick start in the second game, scoring two runs in the first inning. Josh Haley and Ryan Cypret (Ohio State University/ Powell, OH) led the game off with consecutive singles, followed by Lapikas being hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jason Bagoly then came to the plate and hit a line drive single to right field, driving in Haley. Cypret was then driven home by a fielder’s choice hit to the shortstop. After one inning of play, the Terriers led 2-0. Grand Lake would put up four runs during the third inning to take the lead 4-2. Stark County would add a run to their score in the fifth inning, when Bagoly hit a single to center field, driving in Grant McCoury (Elon University/ Canton, OH), who previously reached base by way of a double off the left center field wall. The Mariners would tack on two more runs to their lead in the top half of the eighth inning, putting them permanently ahead of the Terriers 6-3. Starting pitcher and earning the loss for the Terriers was RHP Ben Danziger (University of Akron/ Cleveland Heights, OH). Danziger threw two and two-third innings, allowing four runs (3ER), off four hits. The Terriers will next take the field against the Licking County Settlers Tuesday night at Don Edwards Field in Newark, OH. First pitch is scheduled for 7PM.
