CELINA, Ohio-- The Stark County Terriers downed the Grand Lake Mariners in game two of today’s double dip 6-3. The Terriers improve their record to 15-11 and the Mariners drop to 11-16 on the season. The Terriers bats heated up in the top of the first as Josh Haley (UNC @ Pembroke/ Jackson Springs, N.C.) and Alex Caghan (Rochester/North Canton, Ohio) both singled to start the inning. Mark Lapikas (Toledo/Youngstown, Ohio) then stepped to the plate and hit a strong double to left center clearing the bases of Terriers. Jason Bagoly (Kent State/Austintown) followed with a double of his own to right center before being stranded on base.
The Terriers’ bats stayed hot throughout the game as the Stark County crew collected 17 hits, including seven for extra bases. Although the hits were there, Stark County was unable to bring more than six runners home stranding 10 in the game. Leading the Terriers in the batter’s box were Bagoly, 4-5 with three doubles, a triple, and a RBI on the day and Haley, who punched three singles through. Ryan Cypret (Ohio State/Powell, Ohio) also had a triple on the day. Grand Lake got on the board in the bottom half of the second inning after Ryan Schlater reached on wild pitch after striking out. Kirby Campbell then singled to center field to plate Schlater. The Mariners were able to collect two more runs in the bottom of the fifth after an error by Jason Leblebijian (Bradley/Arlington Heights, Ill.) allowed two to score. The Terriers got the run back in the top of the sixth as Ryan Cypret both singled to lead off the inning. Caghan then stepped to the plate and laid down a textbook suicide squeeze, the Terriers third of the season, to pick up the RBI. That was then followed by Bagoly’s third double of the game to drive home Haley. In the top of the ninth the Terriers bats came alive one last time as Lapikas doubled to center followed by a RBI triple by Bagoly. Zack Leonard (Eastern Michigan/Canton, Ohio) then laid down a sac bunt to bring home Bagoly to account for the final run of the game. Cody Apthorpe (Bowling Green/Windham, Ohio) pitched the first 4.2 innings of game two allowing three runs (all unearned) on two hits while fanning six. Casey Wilson (Kent State/Sagamore Hills, Ohio) relieved Apthrope in the fifth inning going 3.1 innings striking out four. Scott Foster (Akron/Green, Ohio) earned his second save on the season as he held the Mariners scoreless in the ninth.
The Terriers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they stay on the road and head over to Lima to take on the Locos in a Sunday afternoon double header. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. -TBC-
