LIMA, Ohio-- The Stark County Terriers fell in game one of the double header today against the Lima Locos on a picture perfect day for baseball. With the loss the Terriers’ record drops to 15-12 while the Locos move to 11-14-1 on the season. The Locos were able to get on the scoreboard early in the game as they plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff walk issued to Jamal Austin, right fielder Kevin Putkonen hit a two run homerun down the right field line. Cam Luther then added to the Lima’s tally, as he was able to score on an RBI single by Dane Derstine. Stark County rebounded in the fourth to knot the game up at three. Josh Haley (UNC @ Pembroke/Jackson Springs, N.C.) and Alex Caghan (Rochester/North Canton, Ohio) led off the inning with singles that were followed by a RBI double by designated hitter Mark Lapikas (Toledo/Youngstown, Ohio). Kent State product Jason Bagoly (Austintown, Ohio) then stepped to the plate a delivered a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Caghan. Grant McCoury (Elon/Canton, Ohio) then doubled to right field to drive home Lapikas. Lima added three more runs in the home half of the fourth off RBIs by Kevin Gifford, Austin, and Justin Kopale to take a 6-3 lead
Lima continued to add to their lead in the sixth inning with one run being scored by Gifford on an RBI single by Luther. Steve Weber (Eastern Michigan/ North Royalton, Ohio) started the day on the mound for the Terriers. Weber threw four innings allowing six runs on six hits. Weber falls to 0-2 on the season. Ben Danzinger (Akron/Cleveland Heights, Ohio) relieved Weber in the fifth inning going 1.1 innings surrendering one run on three Lima hits. John Nasshan (Bradley/Niles, Ohio) finished the remainder of the game for the Terriers. Game two of the double header is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. this evening. -TBC-
