The Canton Terriers swept the Pittsburgh Pandas over the weekend, tying Shannon Fence for third in the Tri-State Collegiate League and giving the Terriers the automatic bid into the World Series. The Terriers dramatically changed things around this year finishing the regular season 19-13 giving them a 0.594 winning percentage which was a large improvement from last year’s 13-20 record. On Saturday the Terriers swept the Pandas in a doubleheader with game two going into extra innings. Game One- It was another pitcher’s duel in game one as the Canton Terriers only succeeded to put the bat on the ball twice but at the same time only gave up one hit. South paw Cory Johnston (Medina, Ohio/Indian River State College) pitched a complete game for the Terriers with one hit, one walk and nine strike outs. Hitting in game one for the Terriers was RJ Vukovich (North Canton, Ohio/Fairmont State College) who doubled to right and was immediately driven in when Brett Domonkos (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Volunteer State Community College) scorched one to the centerfield wall but was thrown out as he proceeded to turn his hit into a triple. This gave the Terriers enough to etch out the Pandas 1-0. Game Two- The second game was a battle that went into extra innings with the Pandas improving the Terriers final season record to 19-13. The Terriers were down 4-3 going into the top of the 7th when Steve Wido (North Royalton, Ohio/Walsh University) hit a three run homerun giving him his third on the year and putting the Terriers ahead 6-4. The Pittsburgh Pandas answered right back though as they scored two more runs taking the game into extra innings. It was then Jesse Coblentz (Hartville, Ohio/Malone University) who ripped a standup double down the first base line scoring centerfielder Brett Domonkos (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Volunteer State Community College) to give the Terriers the win 7-6. Pitching for the Terriers in game two was Sam McWhorter (East Sparta, Ohio/Urbana College), Joe Elmrick (Louisville, Ohio/Fairmont State College), and Josh Graham (Carrollton, Ohio/Mercyhurst College).
