Granville, Ohio – The Stark County Terriers traveled to Granville, Ohio, Monday to take on the Licking County Settlers. The Terriers started Monday with a three game winning streak and after nearly three hours of baseball in scorching temperatures, the Terriers left Granville with a 4-3 victory and their first four game winning streak of the season, continuing to climb the standings in the Great Lakes League. The Terriers had nine hits in Monday's game, with two of those hits triples and another two of those doubles. And while the Terriers hitting continues to be good, the Terriers defense suffered, committing four errors with one of those errors allowing a Settler run to score. It was the Settlers that struck first, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning off a lead off double, infield single and sacrifice fly. The Settlers scored again in the bottom of the third. After a lead off walk, the Settlers had two consecutive singles, allowing them to score another run and take a two run lead. The Terriers would cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth inning when Cory Hindel (Wake Forest University) scored on Chris Niro's (Miami of Ohio) triple into the right center field gap. Hindel (Wake Forest University) reached base on a two out single. The Terriers would tie the game in the fifth inning much like the way they cut the lead in half an inning before, as Dennis Vaughn (Bowling Green State University) scored on Ross Yoder's (Mount Vernon Nazarene University) triple over the head of the center fielder. Vaughn (Bowling Green State University) singled to lead off the inning. In the top of the seventh inning, the Terriers got their first lead of the night scoring two runs on three consecutive hits. Dennis Vaughn (Bowling Green State University) started the rally with a one out double into the right field gap. Vaughn (Bowling Green State University) would score a batter later as Mark Schoeck (Valparaiso University) lined a double over the head of the left fielder. The next batter, Tyler Maag (Southern Arkansas University) laced a single down the left field line, scoring Schoeck (Valparaiso University) and giving the Terriers a two run lead. In the bottom half of the seventh inning, the Settlers would cut the Terriers lead in half taking advantage of two throwing errors in the inning allowing an unearned run to cross the plate. In the eighth, the Settlers would threaten, but would leave a runner stranded on third base. In the ninth, Kevin Johnson (University of Cincinnati) would come on for the save, and after a single and a walk, Johnson (University of Cincinnati) calmed down and struck out the next two batters. Johnson would walk the next batter, loading the bases but would get the next batter to fly out to center field, giving the Terriers a win and Johnson (University of Cincinnati) his second save of the year. The win went to Steve Davis (Kent State University), improving his record to 2-1. The Terriers improve to 15-13 on the season as they go into the All-Star Break.
