In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Stark County Terriers fell to the Grand Lake Mariners 11-9 in a back and forth slug fest. The Terriers took a early two run lead but would have to play catch up the rest of the game. It seemed every time the Terriers would score, the Mariners would match it, if not surpass it. The Terriers struck first Saturday, scoring two runs in the top half of the second inning. With one out in the inning, Dennis Vaughn (Bowling Green State University) reached base on a walk and moved to second on Phil Bednar's (University of Akron) single through the left side. With one out and two runners on, Rob Wendzicki (Eastern Michigan University) laced a single through the hole on the left side that would get past the left fielder allowing both Vaughn (Bowling Green State University) and Bednar (University of Akron) to score and giving the Terriers a early two run lead. But in the bottom of the second inning, the Mariners would answer back, scoring three runs on a double, a hits batsman and a two run home run to right field, giving the Mariners a one run lead. The Mariners would add three more runs to their lead in the third inning after a single, a double a hits batsman and a walk. In the fourth inning, the Terriers would pull within one run of the Mariners when Brandon White (Kent State University) hit a monstrous blast over the fence in left field, scoring Dennis Vaughn (Bowling Green State University), who reached base on a walk and Phil Bednar (University of Akron), who singled. But just as the second inning went, so did the fourth, as the Mariners scored three runs on two singles, a double and another hits batsman, matching the three runs the Terriers put up in the top of the inning. In the fifth, the Terriers would score another two runs, cutting the Mariners lead in half. The two runs came on a RBI single from Dennis Vaughn (Bowling Green State University) and a RBI double by Phil Bednar (University of Akron). Blake Chaffee (Miami of Ohio), who was hit by a pitch and, Jason Patton (Kent State University), who walked, were the two Terriers who scored in the inning. In the bottom half of the fifth, the Mariners continued their match game, scoring two runs and matching what the Terriers scored in the top half of the inning. The Mariners two runs came on two doubles, a walk and an error. Again in the sixth, the Terriers scored two runs, cutting the Mariners lead in half, but thats as close as the Terriers would come. The Terriers struck with two outs as Ross Yoder (Mount Vernon Nazarene University) reached base on a error. Following Yoder (Mount Vernon Nazarene University) was Blake Chaffee (Miami of Ohio) who would line a single back up the middle and advance to second on the play. Chris Niro (Miami of Ohio) would then lace a single into right center field, scoring both Yoder (Mount Vernon Nazarene University) and Chaffee (Miami of Ohio). The Terriers fall to five hundred at 15-15.
