Lima, Ohio – After falling to the Lima Loco's in game one of Sunday's doubleheader, the Stark County Terriers looked to split the series with the Loco's and stay in the playoff hunt. But after an hour and a half of great pitching and mild hitting, the Terriers fell short again, losing to the Loco's by a final score of 2-1.
The Terriers and Loco's entered the day as two of the top hitting teams in the Great Lakes League, but pitching would dominate Sunday afternoon. With a combined day total of only six runs off of twenty-four hits, the Terriers and Loco's pitching staffs proved to be tops in the league. The Terriers scored their only run of the day in the fourth inning when Dennis Vaughn (Bowling Green State University) lead off the inning by reaching safely on a throwing error by the Loco's second baseman and scored two batters later when with two outs, Jason Patton (Kent State University) laced a double to the wall in the gap. The Loco's scored their first run of the second game on a throwing error. With runners on first and second base, a ball was hit to shortstop, who made the play at third. In an attempt to double up the runner at first, the third baseman threw the ball over the head of the first baseman, allowing a run to score. The Loco's would win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two out double that scored a base runner from second base. The Terriers fall to 15-17 on the season and look to stay in the playoff hunt as they travel to Delaware, Ohio, Wednesday to take on the Delaware Cows in a must win game.
